Mert came to the Museum in 2016 from the North Branch Nature Center.  He had been turned into them as an illegal pet sometime around 2001.  Mert is also missing an eye.

Unlike all of the other turtles in the museum, Mert is very aggressive.  This aggression is directed towards other turtles, which is apparently not uncommon and also towards people and dogs.  His excessively bad attitude is a bit of a mystery and does limit where he goes for education programs.
