Mighty Homer

homer

Red-Tailed Hawk   [Buteo Jamaicensis]

43–57" Wingspan

Homer came to us in the fall of 2018 after being hit by a car in nearby Vernon, VT. She suffered a compound fracture to her left wing. This is an injury that birds rarely fully recover from and she is now unable to fly. In 2019 she molted in her adult colors. Young red-tails have juvenile coloration including striped tails.  That tail is replaced by the trademark red one when they are two years old.
